Drinks, just like desserts and appetizers, are an important part of a country's cuisine. Some are reserved for special occasions and celebrations, while others are common in daily life.

The Middle East has its own recipes, but most are served very cold and are made with fruits, dates, nuts, and of course, some spices. Below, we present some drinks that you might feel like ordering in your next meal.

  1. Date Smoothie
If you like smoothies, you won't hesitate before trying this wonderful drink made with dates, honey, milk, and powdered coconut. It's common to drink it in the mornings as a breakfast, but it can also be enjoyed in the afternoons for an extra boost of energy.

  2. Jellab
During Ramadan, a month of fasting and reflection, Arabs refresh themselves with a gentle drink called “Jellab,” which is prepared with grape molasses and rose water. Some people add pine nuts and raisins, but not in large quantities—don’t let it become too heavy!

  3. Karkadeh
In the Middle East, the hibiscus flower is known as “karkadeh,” and infusions made from it are served both cold and hot. During the hottest months, they are offered to visitors as soon as they arrive at a home.

  4. Mint Lemonade
Another classic for Arabs is mint lemonade, perfect for the hottest season of the year. The combination of the lemon's acidity with the refreshing flavor of mint makes anyone feel revitalized and full of energy.

  5. Laban
Laban (fermented milk drink) is perfect for an afternoon after a walk or shopping. It’s prepared with buttermilk, dates, orange blossom water, rose water, saffron, and cardamom. Creamy with an intense flavor, you can find it in more modern cafes.

Some of these drinks are served in Middle Eastern and Lebanese restaurants. Would you dare to try them?
